Academic Program Changes Approved by the UAPC
July 1997 through June 1998

The University Academic Planning Council considered and recommended the formal academic actions and changes presented below.

Preliminary Entitlement

Approved the request for an entitlement to plan an undergraduate major in Jewish Studies.

Approved the request for an entitlement to plan a Master of Physical Therapy degree.

Authorization to Implement

Approved the authorization to implement a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering.

Ratified the Graduate School Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the Authorization to Implement the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering.

Approved the Authorization to Implement a Master of Engineering.   This program was also approved by the Graduate  Faculty Executive Committee's

Joint Review

Granted final approval of the joint review committee's recommendation for continuation of the Ph.D. in Japanese.

Phased-out

The SED degrees in American Institutions, Biological Aspects of Conservation, Botany, Communication Arts, Comparative Literature, and Zoology. (The B.S. degrees are still available through the College of Letters and Science)

The major and M.S. degree in Education and Music.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the proposal to phase out the major and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Anatomy.

New Degrees for Existing Majors

Approved the following College of Letters and Sciences baccalaureate honors degrees: honors in the liberal arts; honors in the major; and comprehensive honors.

Approved the College of Engineering honors in the liberal arts degree designation.

Approved the proposal from the College of Engineering to establish an Honors in Research Undergraduate Degree.

Name Changes/Restructuring

Approved the proposal to change the name of the undergraduate major from South Asian Studies to Languages and Cultures of Asia.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the proposal to rename and consolidate the graduate majors and degrees in South Asian Studies, South Asian Languages and Literature, and Buddhist Studies to become the graduate major Languages and Cultures of Asia with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.

Approved the renaming of the major Engineering without Designation to Engineering.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the merger of the Physiology and Neurophysiology graduate majors into a single major in Physiology offering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the merger of the Ph.D. degrees and majors in Bacteriology and in Medical Microbiology and Immunology into a new major and Ph.D. degree program in Microbiology.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the merger of the M.S. degree programs in Public Affairs and Policy Analysis and in Public Affairs and Administration to form a M.S degree program in Public Affairs.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the name change of the major and M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Pharmacology (through the Medical School) were changed to the major and M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the restructuring of graduate majors in the School of Pharmacy as follows:    M.S./Ph.D. majors in Pharmaceutical Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics, and Pharmacology-Pharmacy in to the M.S./Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences;   graduate degrees in Continuing Education in Pharmacy, History of Pharmacy, Pharmacy Administration, and Social Studies in Pharmacy in the MS/PhD in Social and Administrative Sciences in Pharmacy;  MS in Hospital Pharmacy renamed MS in Pharmacy.  

New

Approved the named options in Polymer Science, within the Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering, and in Technical Japanese, within the Master of Engineering in Engineering Professional Development.

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the named options in Buddhist Studies, Languages and Literatures, and Religious Studies within the Ph.D. degree program in the major Languages and Cultures of Asia

Ratified the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee's approval of the named options in Public Management and Policy Analysis within the M.S. degree program in Public Affairs.

Phased-out/Restructured

Approved the consolidation of the options within the Communication Arts major entitled "Communication and Public Address: and "Communication Theory and Research" to form the new option "Communication Science and Rhetorical Studies."

Established

Approved the establishment of the Reed Center for Photonics.

Approved the establishment of the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute.

Approved the proposal to establish an Arts Institute.

Approved the merger of the Departments of Neurophysiology and Physiology into a new department named Physiology.

Approved the request to change the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URPL) from a department solely within the College of Letters and Science to a joint department between L&S and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. As part of the restructuring, the transfer of four faculty members from the Landscape Architecture department in CALS to the new URPL department within CALS was also approved.

Phased-out

Approved the phase-out of the Department of Continuing and Vocational Education.

Name Changes

Approved the proposal to change the name of the South Asian Studies department to Languages and Cultures of Asia.

Established

Approved the proposal to establish an undergraduate certificate program in Asian American Studies.

Approved the proposal to establish an undergraduate certificate program in Religious Studies.
