Academic Program Changes Approved by the UAPC
July 1996 through June 1997

The University Academic Planning Council considered and recommended the formal academic actions and changes presented below.

Preliminary Entitlement

B.S. in Computer Engineering.

Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. (An entitlement to plan a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering had been previously approved by the UAPC).

Approved the request for an entitlement to plan a Master's of Engineering.

Phased-out

The undergraduate major in Business Education. No degrees had been granted in this major since 1983-84.

All graduate degrees in the Poultry Science Major. (The Bachelor’s Degrees in Poultry Science remains. This action followed the previous merger of the departments of Poultry Science, and Meat and Animal Science, into Animal Sciences. The merged department developed a new graduate degree program in Animal Sciences that replaces the graduate majors in both Meat and Animal Science, and in Poultry Science. )

The M.A. degrees in Geology and in Geophysics.

The B.S. Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Agriculture and Naval Science B.S. Degree offered through the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (A Bachelor of Naval Science degree is still offered through the College of Engineering.)

New Degrees for Existing Majors

Name Changes/Restructuring

Undergraduate and graduate majors in Meat and Animal Science to Animal Sciences.

Bachelor's and Ph.D. major in Agricultural Economics to Agricultural and Applied Economics.

Tthe Master of Science and the Master of Arts degrees in – Legal Institutions to Master of Legal Institutions.

The majors in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science to match the department name.

New

Environmental Engineering option within the Civil Engineering undergraduate degree program.

Established

The Center for Race and Ethnicity in the Medical School.

The Renk Agribusiness Center in the School of Business.

The Institute for Pest and Pathogen Management in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Phased-out

Two Centers in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences: The Center for Environmental Awareness, and the Center for Resource Policy Studies.

 

Established

Transfered

The department of Animal Health and Biomedical Sciences from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences to the School of Veterinary Medicine.

The Physical Therapy Program from the School of Education to the Medical School. (Physical Therapy will be a distinct program within the Department of Surgery.)

Restructured

The Division of Continuing Studies from four to two departments. Approval of the names for the newly restructured departments: Department of Liberal Studies and the Arts, and Department of Professional Development and Applied Studies.

Phased-out

Name Changes

The Department of Forestry to Forest Ecology and Management.

The Department of Biostatistics to Biostatistics and Medical Informatics.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics to Engineering Physics.

 

Established

Two certificate programs within the College of Letters and Science: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and the Artist Certificate in Music.
