Current Internal Practices
- The University Academic Planning Council meets monthly
during the academic year and summer.
The Provost, as chair of the Council, decides on the scheduling or canceling of meetings. The
usual meeting time for the UAPC is the third Thursday of each month at 3:30 pm. - The meeting agenda is set by the Provost based on items
that have been submitted by
the deans and others for UAPC consideration, on academic planning and policy
issues and concerns. The areas of responsibility of the UAPC are outlined in
Faculty Policies and Procedures section 6.52 B. The UAPC may decide to take
up planning (or budget planning) issues that are not specifically enumerated here
as long as they are within the general responsibility of the committee. Members
of the UAPC are asked, at least annually, to suggest topics the UAPC should consider.
The meeting agenda and materials are normally mailed out a week before the scheduled meeting. - The Provost's staff and particularly the Academic
Planning and Analysis office,
provides support to the UAPC. Minutes are taken at all meetings, and automatic
consent of the minutes of the previous month's meeting is the first item on the
agenda of the subsequent meeting. - Decisions of the UAPC are made by consensus or, if formal
votes are taken, by
majority rule. Formal votes are recorded in the minutes. The minutes may record
minority views, and formal statements of minority views may also be submitted. - The entire Council generally discusses issues; however,
the UAPC may decide to
appoint subcommittees to investigate issues and/or prepare recommendations for
the full council. - The UAPC generally asks representatives from a new
program whose approval is under
consideration to attend the meeting and present their proposal. Customarily, these
representatives leave the UAPC meeting before the final vote, although this is not
required. This allows the UAPC an opportunity for internal discussion of any concerns
before the final vote.
